What is an HMO Health Insurance
Plan?
A type of health insurance policy that has really gained a lot of
momentum over the last several years is the Health Maintenance
Organization. You may have heard it commonly referred to as the, "HMO
Health Insurance Plan". The HMO has gained a lot in
popularity with employer sponsored group health insurance plans
because in ways has been somewhat more affordable because of it's
strict control on treatment. When you sign up with an HMO Health
Insurance Plan you will generally be presented with a list and
you will have to choose a Primary Care Physician which is commonly
referred to in the industry as a PCP. You choose this Physician and
see him or her for everything. You cannot go to any other specialist
or facility without the referral of your PCP and if you do decide to
go anyway you may find your out of luck if you expect the insurance
company to pay. In most cases, HMO health insurance
benefits will not be paid without a referral. Some companies even go
as far as to put some drugs on a "Preferred Drug List" for the
physicians to prescribe to patients. With an HMO health insurance
program it's a goal of the health insurance company to cut costs.
With HMO Health Insurance you may
find that you get a greater degree of preventive healthcare
services as well. It's the belief with some HMO'S if they pay for
common preventive services it may very well save them money in having
to pay for claims down the road. You definitely give up freedom of
choice when on an HMO health insurance plan but the pay
off may be less out of pocket expenses and paper work on your part
because the insurance company generally takes care of most of it,
depending on the company and the plan of course.
